The design intent behind RAW CANVAS was to create a bold yet responsive settlement that both honors and celebrates the magic and mystery of southern Arizona’s majestic cliffs and rock formations.  Ultimately, the objective of the restaurant’s environment, was to create a similar mood to that of a retreat or perhaps even evoke a feeling of ‘sanctuary’ from the elements.

Architecturally, the restaurant has been designed to blend into the landscape with natural hues, materials and textures. The structure is commanding and proportional to the scale of the natural surroundings, yet, provides an intimate setting from which to view and appreciate the scenery. Concertina glass doors open from the sitting area to a spacious desert lounge that frames the view of the natural landscape beyond. Design finishes include concrete floor and rammed earth walls that echo the natural stone of the surrounding red sandstone rock. The furniture features rawhide, natural timbers and fittings in blackened steel, while light-coloured cushions and soft throws add warmth. Raw Canvas confidently blends spectacular American Southwest vistas and culture with decidedly Asian design and spiritual influences.
